Today we sailed from the west end of Tortola to Savanna Bay in Virgin Gorda. Once we anchored we hung out for a while, and then we took our first ocean shower, which many of us enjoyed. After dinner we had our first dive chat! At night we had no rain, but a lot of wind!

Day 2
Author: David C.
Location: Savanna Bay, Virgin Gorda
Today all the eager shipmates woke really early and got to know each other until the staff woke up. After a breakfast of cereal and an entire program talk, we left Tortola and motored out into the bright blue sea. We sailed for a while and reached Virgin Gorda by four. After arriving we lowered the anchor and then had our first intro to scuba talk. We also had our first salt water showers and an amazing dinner of sloppy joes, mashed potatoes, and corn. We also met our newest crew member tonight, Bryan.

Author: Cyrus A.
Location: Savanna Bay, Virgin Gorda
The Pine left the docks for the first time of the session and cruised around the docks for 30 minutes until we picked up our last two members. Once we gathered the full crew we sailed to a small secluded bay called Savanna Bay. The crew learned how to operate sails and take the down. We learned about wind direction and the routine it takes to sail into incoming wind directions. The best parts about today was learning each other's name origins when we had our first "squeeze" session together. Bobby, our dive instructor, taught us all about the diving equipment and the correct method to assemble them. We experienced our first day as a full group, and everybody is growing comfortable with each other.

Location: White Bay, Peter Island
The weather today was very nice, sunny, and warm. The wind was fair and the sea matched it. We sailed out of West End and made our way around the islands to Peter Island (after we all took our swim tests and signed in). After we anchored we got ready for our basic skills dive. After that we relaxed until dinner. Once we were finished we went over to the other dive boat where we took a review test and met the other group. After we returned to our boat we just relaxed until we each went to bed.

Author: Kyle M.
Location: Savanna Bay, Virgin Gorda
The sun was bright, the sky clear, and the sea was calm. The first day of sailing boasted strong winds and eager crew. All day we learned every job in managing a ship and how to sail properly. We learned all steps and jobs on how to raise and lower the mainsail and jib. Taking turns at driving, we all learned to also steer a boat according to the wind. Tacking and trimming the sails were two actions we all mastered. Furling and unfurling were the words of the day.

Today was our first full day aboard Bulot. After we woke up and ate breakfast, we all attended the program meeting and waited for the arrival of our last two crewmates. Once the crew was complete we set sail for Peter Island. It was a two hour sail and many of us enjoyed sitting on Bulot's trampoline, getting soaked by the waves crashing over. When we arrived we geared up and completed our first dive. Then we swam around, showered, and enjoyed a delicious dinner of sloppy joes, mashed potatoes, and corn.

Location: West End, Tortola
While waiting for the rest of our crew members to arrive, we (Ollie and Elliot) helped to transport the food from where it was dropped off to each of the boats related to ActionQuest. There after, several of the other crew members began to arrive. Having checked our passport, emergency money, mobile phone, and other flight related documents in, we then took part in the swim test, which consisted of swimming from the bay to a designated area, twice. Having completed this we would then tread water for ten minutes. Throughout the remainder of the day, more members of Cedar would arrive and partake in checking in and swimming. At approximately 8pm we began to serve dinner, provided by Gabby and Carla, supervised by Elliot. Dinner consisted of pasta, tomato sauce, and garlic bread. Great success. We then cleaned up having finished the meal.

Location: West End, Tortola
The morning started off trying to find something to eat which was difficult because there wasn't really anything to eat. Then, after that, we went on a dive where Abby proceeded to smash eggs on our heads underwater. Cole really appreciated thatnot! After that, we started the long process of cleaning up. Then we had a barbeque! We then watched a slideshow and passed out on our boat just to wake up at about 4am to leave. Everyone is sad to leave, but very excited for a nice long shower. Overall, I think it is safe to say that this was a trip of a lifetime!! YAHHA!

Our final day today! It's kind of a bittersweet moment, as we are all glad to go home, but sad to see our friends go. This morning, after cereal for breakfast, we got off our mooring ball and pepared for our big race. We crossed the finish in seventh, then prepared to completely clean the boat. After finishing we will have some free time, have a final BBQ, auction off our AQ flag, then talk with Mike for a last time. We are all very sad to go, and had a great time at ActionQuest.

We have made so many new friends and learned so many new things we will never forget from all us Pine '09ers. Thank you ActionQuest for changing our lives!

Today was the last day of ActionQuest. It was so saddening. Right when we woke up we had to get ready for our big race day. As we were racing we were in fifth place but soon after we crossed the buoy at Road Town and we gained third. The best part about the day was the amount of energy that went into the race. Our crew all dressed in headbands and drew mustaches on their faces. Some boats dressed in face paint while others dressed in short shorts. In the end we came in third place, with Royal Troon second and Patty J. first. It will be different going back and trying to explain all that we did, everyone had such an awesome time.

We started the day with cookies and cereal for breakfast and then dressed up in preparation for the race. We specially created T-shirts for the race complete with our boat name and nicknames, we also wore intimidation paint on our faces; once we were all ready, we raised the main and began the race. We finished fourth and were all proud of ourselves. Directly following the race we began to very thoroughly clean our entire boat, it took most of the afternoon. We finished the day with a well deserved barbeque and are now dreading going to sleep because it is our last night.

After we finished with that we went on a hike with a few ponds that we skimmed some rocks on, which was cool. Once we hiked we came back to the boat and ate lunch. Then we had our sail test which I still don't know the grade I will receive. I'm looking forward to fonight.

Then we had our sail test which I still don't know the grade I will receive. I'm looking forward to fonight.

Day 19
Author: Liam G.
Location: The Bight, Norman Island
Today we woke up at the crack of dawn to leave Great Harbor for the coast of Salt Island, where we dove the wreck of the British mail steamer the RMS Rhone. We saw many fascinating things on the dive, including lobster, puffer fish, and a giant sea turtle. After taking in the sights we departed for the Bight and sailed through a small squall whilst Eddy and Justin showered on the swim step using the heavy rain as their shower.

Location: The Bight, Norman Island
Today was a rather interesting day. We arrived at Road Town after a morning sail and shopped for a bit, it was nice eating food in the restaurant. We sailed up a bay full of boats and many people. We had a good dinner after some trouble making it. We radioed the staff from a meeting that we didn't have propane for the stove. Upon Will's arrival he lit the stove with ease, a little embarrassing. We have a final program with our boat tonight.

We all awoke with heavy hearts knowing it was our last day aboard Patty J. However, we quickly forgot our worries as we remembered that today was the last day race! After some trouble with our prop we took our position in the lineup as fourth. We were completely ready to take first place! The whole crew was in the Patty J uniform: girls wore their hair in plaits, the boys wore boxers and to top it off, we all wore face paint. The team decided that it was these crucial elements that made us win the race! The crew and I agree that this was been the most memorable and magical vacation that we will treasure forever. We love you Patty J. XOXO

I awoke to the sweet sound of the ocean. It was race day and as fate would have it, I was skipper once again. My crew was ready and excited for the start as we sailed circles around the Bight. Tension was high as we lined up next to the other eight boats. As soon as the race started, our jib flew up like a bolt of lightning from Zeus. Everything was going smoothly as I fought the vicious sea until out of nowhere, the big blue hit me with a cheap shot. The gust of wind hit us hard and caused our steering to break. Julia and I used autopilot and the emergency tiller to expertly navigate us back to West End. It was a fun race but it ended shortly in disappointment. My crew and I went onto shore and admitted our defeat honorably to the vast blue ocean.

This morning we had banana pancakes for breakfast then got to go wakeboarding. We then took our sailing theory and practical exams which were very nerve racking. Our theory exams consisted of a multiple choice test on all we've learned about sailing. Our practical was out on the water where we were met with good weather which was a plus as we all took turns at the helm. The weather turned rainy towards the end of the day as we headed to Norman Island where we spent the night on a mooring ball.

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Today it was sunny out with a good amount of wind for sailing. The water was a little rocky at times, but other than that, the water felt great. We sailed to a wreck called the Beta, which was by far one of the best dives so far. The wreck was awesome and still intact. I got some great pictures of it and got to take a look inside.

Today we were able to wake up naturally, rather than to the sound of blaring music. However, shortly afterwards we realized that Sam had left with the dinghy to "visit" the other boats, which on Bulot means he was picking up victims for a rescue scenario for us. Because we saw it coming, we were at least prepared and the scenario went smoothly. After breaking down our divegear, we raised anchor and sailed to the Fearless wreck, where we had an optional dive. A lunch of grilled cheese sandwiches was prepared while returning to GHP, where we enjoyed an afternoon of relaxing. Conveniently, Sam surprised us with a second scenario right after we all showered, and thus I got into dive gear wearing only boxers and a t-shirt! Shortly thereafter, we had a dinner of teriyaki chicken. We also plan on taking our rescue test this evening.

Today we sailed to the Kissing Wrecks (a divesite), near Cooper Island. The Neptunes achieved the wreck diver specialty by penetrating the tugboat at about 80 feet. From there, we sailed back to home (GHP) to eat dinner. Today was a great day for sailing even though the winds slowed down mid-day, but we had questions answered all day by Mike, our skipper. He allowed us to sail it ourselves with his supervision and knowledge.

Today was a relaxing day as a whole. We started our day with breakfast burritos which included eggs and cheese. A couple of us enjoyed an early morning waterski/wakeboard across the calm waters of the cove. A bit later we motored to Road Town (the capital of the BVI) where we ate and shopped for two hours before heading back on a relaxing sail back to the cove. We ate dinner after showering and swimming around. Our evening activity was a sail chat after which we drifted off to sleep.

Today we started our day with breakfast while sailing. We then took our sailing exam that we have been studying for throughout the trip. Then we hiked up Salt Island. No one lives there but there are salt lakes that the Queen of England gets her salt from. Then we did our first dive as certified divers. We dove a shipwreck called the Rhone. We then came back to the boat and showered. We were also joined by a barracuda. Then on our way to Peter Island we took another part of our sailing exam consisting of tying five types of knots.

Location: The Bight, Norman Island
Today was mainly a sailing day. We went waterskiing first thing in the morning. After that we set sail! We set off from Peter Island at around 10am. The sea was pretty calm but we did have a few gusts which were quite powerful. Camille and Chiara took their sail practicals today which they seemed to pass. We were soon at Road Town. We had lunch at Pusser's. After a seemingly long walk to the other end of Road Town, we got back on Argo. Eric decided to treat us to some serious speed boating. Then we sailed to Norman Island.

We sailed through a storm back to the Bight where had had spent our first night on the sea of the trip. We had our last supper on the boat before our closing ceremony and beginning to write our notecards about each other.

The morning was spent continuing our passage from St. Barths to the BVI's. Calm seas and light wind were a constant. We eventually spotted land and arrived back in the BVI's around 0930. After clearing customs in Spanish Town we sailed to Great Harbor, Peter Island where we anchored once again with the rest of the Action Quest fleet.

We had a delicious lunch at Pussers and then took off for Great Harbour Peter, where we had an optional dive at the Fearless (a wreck dive). As we were on our way to anchoring for the night, Brook, Kamryn, Lauren and I blasted the song "a whole new world" from Aladdin! We then proceeded to sing and dance to the entire song until we began to study for our rescue test. Great day!

At West End we ate some good food, called home, shopped, then loaded back onto the boat for race #2, which was three hours this time! We had the lead the whole way then a mishap occurred with one of the jib lines, putting us in second again. It's allright though, we still had a great time! We had the lead the whole way then a mishap occurred with one of the jib lines, putting us in second again. It's allright though, we still had a great time! Now we're anchored in Great Harbor, Peter Island for some sleep!

Day 17
Author: Allison S.
Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Today was a day filled with a lot of sailing. We got up and had a quick oatmeal breakfast. Then we had a sailing race, which we did not do well in (dead last), but that's ok. After our race we arrived in the port we started in and had lunch and stocked up on more food. Next we started our second sail race, this time we did much better. Right now the chefs are making Mexican night! Woo!! We have two birthdays to celebrate, Paris and Nick. Cake! Yum!

Day 16
Author: Taylor H.
Location: Sandy Spit, Green Cay
Today we woke up to a bright sunny day. We left GHP at around 9 o'clock and motored to a divesite where a wreck was located. Today was the day that we earned our wreck diver certification! We dove down to a boat, where we performed several skills before we were allowed to penetrate it. When we reached the surface on the second dive, we were certified. We then motored back to GHP where we were hoping for a visit by the ice cream boat, but unfortunately she was out. We finished the day with a good meal of teriyaki chicken.

We awoke early today to rush to the playgrounds for our morning fun dive. It was great: lots of swim throughs and caves. We also had our second research dive and the Neptunes had their lecture. We spent the whole afternoon on the beach that looks like a post card picture. Peter got burried in the sand and we shaped a race car around him. It was a fun day. I'm on my way to lifeworks as I'm writing this.

Today was a very relaxed day. We woke up a bit on the late side and enjoyed a delicious breakfast of pancakes. After cleaning up, we saled over to Sandy Spit and embarked on a search and recovery dive, where we had to think of and execute a plan to find our secondary anchor. We found the anchor without any assistance from Sam or Chrispy. After we recovered the anchor we relaxed for a bit, when unexpectedly we had a surprise scenario! Our rescue skills still need a little polish, but we got the job done. After more sunbathing we got to enjoy some time on a nearby beach. Later tonight, we are taking part of our rescue test.

Today we had our sail practical (sail test) so we sailed all day long. It was actually really fun and we had a great day. However we were a little bit tired because yesterday we had a BBQ and dance at Sidney's and we stayed late because it was awesome!! Once the sailing test was over we hung out on a little island with the other boats where we played in the sand and swam. At the end it was a great day and everybody passed!!

Today we got to sleep in til 7:30 because of the long day yesterday, which was amazing! When we woke up we had pancakes and left Sidney's to sail. The sail today was a little different than usual because we had to take our practical sailing test. It was fun. Anyway, after that we arrived at Sandy Spit and the Barracudas did a dive while the others went to the beach. For dinner Mike came over. After dinner we did a cool activity with postcards.

Day 16
Author: Sarah D.
Location: Sandy Spit, Green Cay
Today was mostly a sailing day. All twelve of us took our practical tests for our IYT sailing certifications. The practical included knowing and understanding the difference between a tack and a jibe, points of sail, and performing man overboards. Thankfully the weather was perfect, there was enough wind to provide enough speed for the boat but at the same time it was extremely hot. Picking the funiest part of the day would be difficult just because of the multiple jokes our boat makes.

Today we were able to wake up late for a change (7:30 is considered late). After breakfast we had to set sail and leave the dock of Sidney's to take our practical exams. While some of us were on deck trying to impress our skipper, others were in the salon tying knots. Once everybody took this exhausting exam, though, we were able to go hang out at the beach on Sandy Spit.

Today was a wee bit stressful for some of us (although nonetheless enjoyable) because it was our sailing practical exam. Each of us had to run the boat and prove our shipmate skills. It's all good though because we had pancakes for breakfast. During the exam our skipper Coco practically spit intelligence, and when we finally finished I'm sure all of us felt satisfied and well versed in sailing. The long sail left us on the beautiful island of Sandy Spit, where the whole program (dive side and sail side) frolicked and mingled on the beach with pink sand. Lifeworks is tonight, and a lovely spread of franks and beans leaves us well prepared.

The weather today was good. A bit cloudy towards the end of the day, but otherwise it was absolutely perfect. The wind was favorable, as well as the sea conditions. Although we lost a VHF and were unable to recover it, everyone's spirit remained undampened. We sailed most of the day and everyone did well at the helm. Once we got to Sandy Spit we enjoyed a good time chilling at the beach. Some time with the other boats left everyone in a good mood, and the day ended very well indeed. JD's surprise left everyone crying with laughter and although the trip is soon to end, it feels as if no one wants it to.

We woke up tired because yesterday night we enjoyed an amazing dinner at Jost van Dyke island and we got to bed late. After having breakfast and cleaning the boat, we had practical sailing lessons. After spending the morning doing lessons, we went to a small wonderful island where we had fun with the people of the other ActionQuest boats. The afternoon passed quickly and we had to return fast to Cedar to clean it again and to have a shower because Jim was having dinner with us.

Today was the most tiring day by far. We had an early start at six in the morning. We climbed the mountain for about four hours. Once we were finished we had lunch and went to a market. After that we went to Sandy Cay and had a sand castle contest. It was the best sand castle I have ever made. We made three big pyramids. It was awesome. We have yet to find out the winner. Now we are about to go to Sidney's Peace and Love restaurant for a dance. Everyone dressed up and looks great. This trip has gone by so fast and I don't want to go home yet.

We woke up really early so we could gt on the dock and start our long hike to the top of Mt. Sage, the highest point in the BVI. The hike was really challenging- three miles each way on steep terrain but the feeling of accomplishment and the view made it all worthwhile. After that we walked through the town of Cane Garden Bay and ate cheeseburgers in paradise. We went back to our boats to sail over to Jost van Dyke and Sandy Cay for our sand castle building contest. The castles were amazing but ours was the best. Then Sidney's Peace and Love reggae party and shopping. Things are all great in the BVI. We're all certified divers and tomorrow is our sailing practical.

Today we woke up nice and early at around 5:45. We were shuttled over to Cane Garden Bay where Mike gave us a talk about the hike to the top of Mt. Sage- the highest point in the BVI. The Royal Troon was represented by Adam and I as we were the first Troonsmen to make it to the summit. After taking in the amazing view, we descended into Cane Garden Bay for some "Cheeseburgers in Paradise." Afterwards we went to Sandy Cay for the sand castle contest. Our goal was to create a dragon that shot coca cola and mentos out of it's mouth, but that didn't didn't work so well. Well, I'm going to go eat some BBQ. See you soon!

Today we had a very early wake up call, 5:45, so that we would have a lot of time to prepare ourselves for the hike. Just Julie was excited about it and all of us were quite reluctant to the idea of walking 8 miles of a very steep heel. Our group was the first one to arrive at the top, but after rescuing a dog we arrived second. After that we did a sand castle competition in which we arrived second, but we should've won. We finished the day with a BBQ while listening to a reggae band.

It was probably one of the longest days of our lives on ActionQuest. We all hiked to the highest point in the BVI, Mt. Sage. With a whopping 8 miles and steep slopes, some of us did not enjoy the entire journey. But the view was very rewarding. Then we made our way to the most gorgeous beach to have a sand castle contest. I'm pretty confident that we dominated. And now I'm rushing to get ready for our reggae BBQ!
